Asha Parekh

Asha Parekh

Along with Sadhana,my another favorite actress is undeniably her closest friend Asha Parekh. Blessed with talent and a noble heart, she had a vivacious appearance on screen. In an era when tragedies were the success  formula for the films, she was a breath of fresh air.She played the romantic lead with actors which were known for their flamboyant and energetic performances such as Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor and matched their spirits.

Born into a middle-class Gujarati Jain family on 2 October 1942 in Mumbai, she started learning Indian classical dance  at a very young age.Her talent was noticed by the film makers and she got her first break  in  Aasmaan (1952).Later she also appeared in  Baap Beti (1954) by Bimal Roy. Later she was considered for Goonj Uthi Shehnai, but dropped from the project. But the luck favored her and she got cast by  Subodh Mukherjee in his film Dil Deke Dekho opposite Shammi Kapoor which was a huge success, and she never looked back again. In the 70’s she got her  first Filmfare Best Actress Award for Kati Patang (1971).She also gave a splendid performance in Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978).Later she started a production company, Akruti, and produced serials like Palash and Baaje Payal. She received her Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 as well as Stardust-Lifetime Achievement Award this year.

Here are some of the songs which were picturised on her which are favorite of mine which I want to share with you.

Bade Hain Dil Ke Kaale-Dil Deke Dekho A song packed with verve and spontaneity,it is simply delightful to watch and is my all time favorite. Usha Khanna’s score and Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhosle’s vocals add zest to the song.

Yeh Aankhen Uff Yumma –Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai -Paired with Dev Anand Asha Parekh matches his verve, it is an intoxicating song enhanced by Rafi’s intoxicating voice and Asha Bhosle’s playful voice,it’s a wonder of Shanker-Jaikishan’s musical score

Ek Baar Jara Phir Keh Do Tum-Bin Badal Barsaat-Here Asha plays the love interest of the hero(Biswajeet)  whose family is under a curse.Sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar ,it is a sweet and romantic song with a pleasant score by Hemant Kumar

Itna Na Mujh Se Tu-Chhaya -Asha plays a rich girl who falls in love with a struggling poet played by Sunil Dutt. It.It is one of the best gems of  Talat Mahmood and Lata Mangeshkar duets. Salil Chowdhury’s music is ethereal, one tends to listen to the song again and again.

Raat Ka Sama-Ziddi- This movie revolves round a tomboyish lass who gets transformed into a loving woman by the virtue of love, played by Asha. She displays her brilliant dancing skills in this song .Sung by Lata Mangeshkar and adorned by the fantastic score by S.D.Burman, it is a melodious song to hear as well as a treat to the eyes.

Aankhon Se Jo Utri Hai Dil Mein-Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon-A wonderful song complemented by excellent expressions by Asha Parekh and melodious voice of Asha Bhosle,it describes the yearning of love.Composed by  O.P.Nayyar the music is mellifluous and bears his distinct mark.

Aye Kaash Kisi Diwane Ko-Aaye Din Bahar Ke – It is the song of two Sahelis who exchange their views on the consequences of falling in love, played by Asha and  Nazima who is not less beautiful than Asha.Beautiful lyrics by Anand Bakshi and superb music by  Laxmikant Pyarelal and jugalbandi between Asha Bhosle & Lata Mangeshkar makes it  one of the top songs of the ‘Saheli’ genre.

Mujhe Tum Mil Gaye Humdum – Love In Tokyo-One of Lata’s timeless songs,it depicts the delicate feelings of love and its celebration. A touching as well as melodious song with superb score by Shankar Jaikishan,it is a song to cherish for decades to come.

Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar Doon – Baharon Ke Sapne-It is a  soothing song  which emphasizes the sharing of one’s misfortune and sufferings with the beloved to ease the burden of one’s mind. There is a tone of sympathy in Lata’s voice  which touches the heart of the audiences.Too bad it was remixed for a  music video which was far from being decent.

Parde Mein Rahne Do-Shikar – A suspense thriller starring Dharmendra and Asha Parekh,it had excellent songs and was a box-office success of the above pair.It boasted of a melodious score by Shankar Jaikishan duo and fabulous lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri. This song is regarded as one of best songs of Asha Bhosle and still retains it old charm.

The list of the of my favorite songs  picturised on Asha Parekh is long enough,so I guess have to stop here…..

Hey, a post after a long time. 🙂 Asha is not one of my favourite actresses but she was definitely watchable, and indeed, very, very pretty in her earlier films. And she did have a plethora of lovely songs picturised on her. You’ve posted some of my favourites – Ye aankhen uff yumma, Bade hain dil ke kaale, Raat ka sama, Itna na mujhse tu pyaar badha, Aaja piya tohe pyaar doon…

My picks would also include Ye kisne geet chheda from Meri Soorat Teri Aankhein, Jab chali thandi hawa from Do Badan, Laage na mora jiya from Ghunghat and Saathiya nahin jaana from Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke.

🙂 Yes Asha indeed looked very pretty in her earlier films such as Bin Badal Barsaat,Meri Soorat Teri Aankhein and Dil Deke Dekho. One more interesting thing about her,she was the batch-mate of my favorite actress Sadhana at Filmalaya acting school,so it gives me another reason to like her 🙂 “Jab chali thandi hawa” is one of my personal favorites too.She was at her best when she had to exhibit her dancing prowess on screen.I particularly liked her performances in Ziddi and Chhaya..
P.S.-I wanted to share photo of Asha Parekh with Sadhana at Filmalya, but there seems no option in the comments section to upload it 😦
